A race driver rarely makes the decisive decision while fresh. It arrives after heat, vibration, physical loading, radio traffic and hundreds of smaller decisions have already taxed the system.
Brain Endurance Training, often shortened to BET, is designed for that reality. It combines structured cognitive load with physical or sport-specific training so that cognitive quality becomes more resistant to mental fatigue.
Why racing creates a cognitive endurance problem
Motorsport asks the driver to sustain attention while continuously selecting, suppressing and updating information. The driver must ignore irrelevant stimuli, respond to changing grip, manage traffic and execute procedures without allowing one task to consume the entire system.
Traditional reaction drills can measure or rehearse a response, but they do not automatically build resistance to prolonged cognitive load. BET changes the question from how fast can you respond now, to how well can you still respond after the workload has accumulated.
What a serious BET programme contains
The programme begins with a baseline. We examine reaction time, accuracy, variability and how performance changes across the task. A single best score is less informative than the pattern of decay.
We then select tasks that match the limiting quality, prescribe duration and intensity, and decide where the work belongs. Cognitive training can precede physical work, follow it, or run concurrently. The right choice depends on the adaptation we want and the total cost of the training week.
How Maverick uses Soma NPT
Soma NPT is the delivery and monitoring platform. It allows us to control cognitive tasks, collect performance data and follow trends remotely. It is not the coaching system by itself.
Maverick interprets the data inside the driver’s complete programme. A slower response may reflect an appropriate training stimulus, accumulated fatigue, poor recovery or a badly timed session. Context decides whether we progress, maintain or remove load.
What improvement should look like
The objective is not to become brilliant at one app task. We want greater stability when the driver is tired, fewer unforced errors and more reliable access to attention and inhibition when the environment becomes dense.
Research on BET is promising for endurance-related outcomes and for resisting deterioration under mental fatigue. It is still an evolving field. BET should support physical preparation, recovery, nutrition and technical practice, not compete with them.
The practical standard
What to take into the next decision
- Train cognition under a defined load, not through random games.
- Track accuracy, reaction time, variability and performance decay.
- Integrate BET with the complete physical and racing programme.
- Judge transfer by execution under fatigue, not app scores alone.
